Those diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) need to stop constantly monitoring their oxygen levels and heart rate using wearable devices like pulse oximeters, Apple Watches, and Fitbits. Elevated heart rate (tachycardia) in POTS is often a compensatory mechanism rather than the root cause of the condition. Instead of fixating on the symptoms, the focus should be on identifying and addressing the underlying problem causing POTS. Constantly measuring heart rate and oxygen levels could lead to an unhealthy obsession with variables that are merely effects of the real issue, and cause unnecessary anxiety and stress when we see spikes or drops in our HR/Oxygen.
