An extinction burst is very common for those recovering from persistent pain. This presents as 'flares' of that pain and when this happens it can confuse the person as there is no obvious reason for them to experience it. This is called an extinction burst and here is a clinical example of one. Knowing this can happen means that if and when it does, the person has more opportunity to understand why. The meaning of that experience then allows the person to respond and no longer unconsciously react.
