History of Calonarang Dance:
Dramatari is a magical ritual that melakonkan stories related to witchcraft, black magic and white science, known as Pangiwa / Pangleyakan and Panengen. The plays are generally rooted in the story of Calonarang, a semi-historical story from the reign of King Airlangga in Kahuripan (east Java) in the IX century.
Because some parts of the show display scenes of power and immunity (demonstrating scenes of death bangke-bangkay, piercing rangda with sharp weapons freely) then Calonarang is often regarded as magic (batin).
This dramatari is essentially a combination of three important elements, namely Babarongan represented by Barong Ket, Rangda and Celuluk, Element Pagambuhan represented by Condong, Putri, Patih Manis (Panji) and Patih Keras (Pandung) and Palegongan represented by Sisiya-sisya (pupil -student). Other important figures of this dramatari are Matah Gede and Bondres.
