During the Dinagyang weekend early this year, I got the chance to explore the museums and heritage attractions of Iloilo City on foot. It was a rare chance that Calle Real or Basa Street was closed to traffic due to the Festival and I took this opportunity to admire the old buildings located along this street dubbed as the Escolta of Iloilo.
From Plaza Libertad, where I visited the San Jose Church, I walked my way through Calle Real to get a good glimpse of many neo-classical and art deco buildings that still stand today.
I also got to visit four of the many museums in the city - the Museum of the Philippine Economic History, the Museum of Philippine Maritime History, the National Museum Iloilo Branch (where I was able to see the rare Oton gold death mask), and the Museo Iloilo.
I also visited the old Iloilo Provincial Capitol Building and the historic Arroyo Fountain, before capping the day in Jaro Plaza where they play classical music on the background.
