Cabs at the airport are quite pricy. A very good alternative is to take the city bus, 1.80eu. You may have a walk to the hotel so depending on how much luggage and actual location may require a cab. I found the bus to be modern, on time, and friendly driver. There are many car rental places in Heraklion to rent a car. The airport is very congested and stressful.
I did ask a nice woman working at a ticket kiosk which is the correct bus.
We dropped off the rental car at the airport and needed a ride back to the hotel at the port.
