Procedure:
Flow Cups for checking efflux time under controlled conditions in the lab
- Preparation of test procedure -- 0:39
- Place flow cup in a precisely horizontal position using ring stand or temperature control jacket -- 0:47
- Level the cup with the spirit level -- 0:53
- Close orifice -- 1:20
- Pour in test liquid -- 1:23
- Draw a clean glass plate over the rim of the cup, removing superfluous liquid into the overflow reservoir and closing the cup -- 1:32
- Remove glass plate horizontally -- 1:41
- Open the orifice and start the stopwatch simultaneously -- 1:49
- Stop the watch with the first break in the efflux stream -- 1:55
- Repeat the measurement three times, each with a new sample of the same material
What are Flow Cups?
For many applications it is not necessary to know the absolute viscosity of a paint system. A parameter permitting a relative classification and estimation is often sufficient. The efflux time,
measured in seconds, has proven to be a practical measure. It is determined using flow cups of various designs following the appropriate international / national standards. These cups hold
a defined volume of liquid which flows through an orifice. The reproducibility of such measurements depends on
– The accuracy of the size of the cup
– A constant temperature during measurement
– The Newtonian flow behaviour of the liquid
