US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton held two meetings in New York on Sunday in a bid to further peace in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
The Obama administration is pressing Pakistan to help the US fight the Haqqani insurgent network after last week''s attacks on the American embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan.
US officials say Clinton told her Pakistani counterpart, Hina Rabbani Khar, that the Taliban-affiliated militants must be dealt with.
They say Khar agreed with Clinton that the Haqqani network was a threat to Americans and Pakistanis alike.
Clinton also met EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton ahead of a tense week for the Middle East when Palestinians will seek state recognition at the UN.
The United States and Europe have been scrambling for a strategy that would help avoid a jarring showdown over whether to admit an independent Palestine as a new United Nations member.
Instead, they sought to guide Israel and the Palestinians back into the tough bargaining on a long-sought peace agreement.
Clinton and Ashton discussed the current trajectory in New York, in which the Palestinian plan to gain statehood and membership at the UN would run headfirst into an American veto in the Security Council, and possible Israeli recriminations.
