Three statues estimated to be around 600 years old have emerged from the Yangtze River in southwestern China as water levels in Asia’s largest river fall. The river level at Chongqing is the lowest seen at this time of year in at least 50 years as the nation struggles with heatwaves and drought. Initial estimates indicate the statues could date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Experts say the sculptures may have been considered a good omen for people floating by them on boats.
