Zemun, Begrade street of Rabbi Judah Alkalai(1798-1878)
Rabbi Alkalai was Sephardic Rabbi for 50 years in Zemun, spiritual father of Zionism.
Street has this name from 1992, in time of Austroungaria it was Jewish street ,German-Judengasse.
Askenazi sinagogue build 1850 by donation of Jews, and it was active till 1941 when German troops robbed it and banned every gathering.
Synagogue was nationalised in 1962 in Yugoslavia, under communist regime, and become propriety of state(before it owner was Jewish community).
1997 municipal authority of Zemun gave this object in rent to a restaurant.
Rabbi Judah Alkalai was personal friend of GrandFather of Theodor Herzl who also lived in Zemun. Rabbi Alkalai married parents of Herzl . Theodor Herzl become familiar with work of Rabbi Alkalai as his grandfather had original work of Rabbi where he represented his idea of Jewsih return in Israel and worked on it all his life.
