Northern Lithuania is home to the city of Šiauliai. It leads directly northeast to the Hill of Crosses. The location, which is a destination of pilgrimage, was chosen in the 19th century as a representation of opposition to Russian control. There are currently around 100,000 crosses in it. Among the several branches of the Aušros Museum in the city centre are the Bicycle Museum and the Photography Museum, which features vintage Lithuanian images and a camera obscura.
