After visiting Medellin, we took a Medellin day trip to Guatapé and El Peñol, two beautiful towns about 1.5-2.5 hours from Medellin. In between these two towns and what feels like the middle of nowhere stands a very impressive 7,000 foot tall rock called La Piedra del Peñol (also known as El Peñón de Guatapé - the two towns still argue over whose it is :)
We had seen pictures of this incredible rock and knew we had to visit it. La Piedra del Peñol / El Peñón de Guatapé has 700+ steps leading to the top of it! After lots of huffing and puffing to get to the top, we were rewarded with an incredible view!
The colorful town of Guatapé and the bright blue lake of El Peñol are so beautiful and we loved exploring them after completing our mission of climbing the rock. This makes for a great Medellin day trip and is doable on your own if you can get transportation to the rock, although we chose to tour with a guide.
