On the Anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu, formally called Operation Gothic Serpent, we honor and remember the 19 American special operators, Rangers, and soldiers who lost their lives and the 73 who were wounded. This battle was the longest sustained firefight by U.S. forces since the Vietnam War.
In 2019, we heard the real stories behind the movie “Black Hawk Down” from the soldiers who were there: Brigadier General James C. Nixon, U.S. Army (Retired); Major Larry D. Moores, U.S. Army (Retired), Chief Warrant Officer, 4th Class Gerard Izzo, U.S. Army (Retired), and our President and CEO Lieutenant General Michael Ferriter, U.S. Army (Retired). Each of these individuals were members of Task Force Ranger, and awarded for actions in Mogadishu. Recently, the Department of Defense upgraded 58 Bronze Stars for Valor to Silver Stars, our nation’s third highest valor award, or Distinguished Flying Crosses.
