STORYLINE:
Syrian government forces attacked a border area with Turkey using helicopters and artillery after rebels captured a crossing point, activists said on Sunday.
The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Ras al-Ayn border area was "under siege" on Sunday as tens of rebels tried to hold onto the border crossing.
A helicopter was seen firing on the Ras al-Ayn region in Syria's northeastern province of al-Hasaka, from a vantage point along Turkey's 910-kilometre (565.5-mile) frontier with Syria.
Tensions remain high as the Turkish military continue to patrol the border, to ensure the Syrian conflict does not spill over into Turkish territory.
Rebel forces could be seen at the Ras al-Ayn border complex on Sunday, from neighbouring Ceylanpinar, in Turkey.
Local authorities in Ceylanpinar have shut down schools and are keeping residents away from the border area for security reasons.
About 2,000 to 3,000 people are fleeing Syria daily to escape fierce fighting between rebels and government forces, according to the UNHCR.
The recent surge brings the number registered with the UNHCR to more than 408,000, officials said, with the largest flow into Turkey coming from the fighting at Ras al-Ayn in the predominantly Kurdish oil-producing province of al-Hasaka.
