El coyote (Canis latrans) o lobo de la pradera, es un miembro de tamaño mediano de la familia de los perros que incluye lobos y zorros.
Especies de coyotes.
El coyote es un miembro muy extendido de los canidos, una familia que incluye zorros, lobos y perros domésticos. Se encuentra desde el norte de Canadá hasta América Central.
Debido a esta amplia dispersión, existen 19 subespecies de coyotes, clasificadas por diferencias genéticas y área de distribución:
Coyotes occidentales:
De las 19 subespecies de coyotes, seis están en el oeste de Norteamérica.
El coyote del norte se extiende desde el centro de Canadá hasta Alaska.
El coyote de montaña se extiende desde los estados del noroeste como Washington hasta Canadá y el sur de Alaska.
El más oscuro, el coyote de la costa noroeste se encuentra en las costas de Washington y Oregon.
Tres subespecies que son casi idénticas van desde California hasta la península de Baja California en México.
Coyotes del centro de EE. UU. :
Cuatro subespecies se encuentran en los estados más centrales.
El coyote de las llanuras vive desde el centro de Canadá hasta Colorado, Oklahoma y Texas.
Esta subespecie, una de las más pequeñas, tiene un pelaje pálido.
El coyote de las llanuras de Texas está en el oeste de Texas y el este de Nuevo México.
El coyote de Mearn vive en Arizona, Utah y Nuevo México y en el norte de México.
El coyote del bajo Río Grande tiene un rango pequeño, desde el extremo sur de Texas hasta el norte de México.
Coyotes orientales:
Las dos subespecies de los Estados Unidos más orientales tienen algunas diferencias notables con otras subespecies.
El coyote del noreste se extiende desde la región de los Grandes Lagos hasta el oeste de Nueva York.
Los miembros de esta subespecie tienden a tener dientes más grandes que otros coyotes.
Los coyotes del sureste son los más grandes, y tienen toques rojos en su pelaje. El tamaño y el colorido de esta subespecie podrían indicar que se está cruzando con lobos rojos.
Habita la mayor parte del sureste de los Estados Unidos.
Coyotes centroamericanos:
Centroamérica y México albergan el mayor número de subespecies, con siete tipos.
El coyote de Tiburón vive solamente en la isla de Tiburón en la costa oeste de México; es un nadador fuerte comparado con otras subespecies.
Las otras seis subespecies de esta área son casi indistinguibles entre sí, y sus poblaciones se superponen en toda la región.
Características de los coyotes.
El coyote posee orejas puntiagudas, un hocico delgado y una cola espesa y caída, el coyote a menudo se asemeja a un pastor alemán o a un collie alemán. Los coyotes suelen ser de color marrón grisáceo con matices rojizos detrás de las orejas y alrededor de la cara, pero la coloración puede variar de gris plateado a negro.
La cola suele tener la punta negra. Los ojos son amarillos, en lugar de marrones como muchos de los perros domésticos.
La mayoría de los adultos pesan entre 11 y 15 kilogramos, con unos pocos individuos más grandes que pesan hasta 20 kilogramos.
Comportamiento de los coyotes.
Los coyotes suelen tener un sistema social muy organizado, incluso en las zonas urbanas.
Consiste en manadas, o grupos, de coyotes que defienden territorios de otros coyotes. Se ha identificado a los coyotes que viven en manadas y que viajan solos (coyotes solitarios).
Los grupos suelen estar compuestos por una pareja de macho alfa y hembra, y algunos otros coyotes.
El análisis genético de los coyotes ha revelado que casi todos los compañeros de manada son parientes cercanos, excepto el par alfa.
