In this video, we discuss one of the main Commercial Pilot Maneuvers called the "Chandelle".
A chandelle maneuver, often simply referred to as a "chandelle," is an aerobatic flying maneuver performed by aircraft, particularly fixed-wing airplanes. It is a graceful and challenging maneuver that demonstrates the pilot's skill in controlling the aircraft's altitude, heading, and bank angle simultaneously. The term "chandelle" is derived from the French word for "candle" and describes the maneuver's graceful, climbing, and turning trajectory that resembles the shape of a candle flame.
Here's a step-by-step description of a chandelle maneuver:
1. Entry Phase:
- The pilot begins the maneuver by flying straight and level at a consistent airspeed.
- The aircraft should be trimmed for coordinated flight, meaning it is neither rolling nor yawing on its own.
2. Initial Climb:
- The pilot smoothly applies back pressure on the control stick or yoke, initiating a gradual climb.
- The aircraft's nose is raised gently to start the climb, without abrupt control inputs.
3. Roll and Turn:
- As the aircraft climbs, the pilot simultaneously adds coordinated aileron input to initiate a roll, banking the aircraft.
- The goal is to maintain a coordinated turn throughout the maneuver to avoid slipping or skidding.
4. Maximum Bank:
- The pilot continues the climb and bank, aiming to reach the maximum bank angle typically between 30 to 45 degrees, depending on the aircraft and pilot's preference.
5. Halfway Point:
- At the midpoint of the climb, the aircraft should be in a steep bank with the nose pitched up.
- The altitude gain should be roughly 90 degrees from the initial altitude.
6. Rollout:
- Once the desired altitude and bank angle are reached, the pilot smoothly begins to level the wings by reducing aileron input.
- The aircraft should continue to climb slightly during this phase.
7. Recovery:
- After leveling the wings, the pilot gradually reduces the back pressure on the control stick or yoke to return the aircraft to straight and level flight.
- The aircraft should regain its initial airspeed and altitude during the recovery.
8. Straight and Level Flight:
- The maneuver ends with the aircraft flying straight and level, at the same altitude and airspeed as before the chandelle.
Chandelles are often practiced by aerobatic pilots to enhance their flying skills and to demonstrate precision control of the aircraft. They are also sometimes used in flight training to help pilots develop a better understanding of coordinated control inputs, energy management, and aircraft handling characteristics. Proper execution of a chandelle requires finesse and coordination, making it a challenging but beautiful maneuver to watch and perform.
