The Oxena (or Ossena ) waterfalls are a natural waterfall in the territory of Militello in Val di Catania , an Italian town in the province of Catania in Sicily .
These are beautiful natural waterfalls located south of the territory of Militello on the border with the territory of Francofonte (SR), reachable via the sp28 ii Militello-Vizzini Scalo junction for Francofonte. Set in a beautiful environmental context, characterized by riparian species that accompany the stream and by the presence of olive trees, carob trees, oaks, prickly pears, tamarisks and oleanders, they are permanently fed by the river Ossena (or Oxena). The Ossena is a tributary of the Trigona which in turn flows partly into Lake Lentini and partly into the San Leonardo (river that crosses the Plain of Catania and flows into the Ionian Sea). Basalt rocks characterize the riverbed and their visit is fascinating, especially in the warm seasons for the refreshment they offer. The visit of these waterfalls allows you to enjoy an unusual environment, made up of verdant quarries and sunny plateaus: you walk along the bottom of one of these caves, under a vegetal tunnel that acts as a vault, and you explore the river that has never been deep. The Ossena waterfalls today constitute one of the most intact and fascinating natural environments of the Iblei of Catania.
Formed by the homonymous stream, the waterfalls are active all year round, ensuring the presence of water even in periods of drough
