Plant and Planting#
vine, Plant whose stem requires support and that climbs by tendrils or twining or creeps along the ground, or the stem of such a plant. Examples include bittersweet, most grapes, some honeysuckles, ivy, lianas, and melons.
Vines are plants with climbing or trailing stems. They are unique in that they have multiple evolutionary origins and usually live in tropical locations.
Vines can be classified into five classes based on how they climb:
Twining plants
Leaf-climbing plants
Tendril-bearing plants
Root-climbing plants
Hook-climbers
Vines can also be grouped into four basic categories based on how they climb: Clinging, Sprawling, Tendrils, Twining.
Some vines use a combination of climbing methods. All vine types typically need some type of support system, such as roots that act like suction cups.
Vines can differ in size and origin. For example, honeysuckle is a vigorous perennial vine that can be deciduous, semi-evergreen, or evergreen. It is usually grown for its fragrant flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other insect pollinators.
