In honor of New York’s Compost Awareness Week, today’s Wild Wednesday Video takes a look at Earthworms in one of our compost bins. Under our feet and in our compost bins earthworms, Lumbricus terrestris, are hard at work decomposing organic materials and making nutrient rich humus. In a forest, this nutrient cycling allows for constant growth of new plants. In our compost bins, compost is produced that replenishes the nutrients in our soil without the need for chemical fertilizers so we can grow nutrient rich veggies organically.
