The Bitterroot River is the 3rd most heavily fished stream in Montana, behind only the Madison and Bighorn Rivers. I spent several days fishing the upper section in early September. The stream is not difficult to wade but most of the people I saw were in drift boats. The main fish appears to be the cutthroat trout but rainbow and brown trout are also present and can be found in large sizes.
