People with disabilities are amongst the most marginalised group in the world. They continue to be left out of disaster preparedness, and are left vulnerable when it comes to disasters and emergencies, including in the Asia-Pacific region which is one of the most disaster-prone areas globally.
To confront this situation, the Pacific Disaster Ready component of the Australian Humanitarian Partnership - an initiative of the Australian Government and Australian NGOs - aims at building national capacity to address conflicts, disasters and other humanitarian crises.
The Pacific Disability Forum and CBM Global’s Inclusion Advisory Group have been implementing our own sub-project as part of Pacific Disaster Ready to support Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), in five countries: Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste.
The PDF and CBM have been supporting these OPDs to bring their lived experience of disability and their expertise on disability rights into disaster risk reduction and preparedness efforts.
Hear from the OPDs involved on how they have worked to make disaster preparations and responses more inclusive for people with disabilities.
