Dee Dee Penny since 2008 has been best known as frontwoman to New York punks Dum Dum Girls. She's recently reinvented herself, however, as Kristin Kontrol, a solo project alias under which she swaps her normal Rickenbacker guitar jangles for new wave, krautrock smarts.

We caught up with Penny at SXSW on the week of her first show under the guise, to hear about how she expected Sub Pop to be hesitant about the project, how she's translated her upcoming debut album into a live show and why she named herself after a decade-old email address.
