Basel is a city on the Rhine in northwestern Switzerland not far from the borders with France and Germany. The town hall, built in the 16th century with its red sandstone facade, is a landmark of the medieval old town around the market square. The Gothic Basel Minster, built in the 12th century, offers a view of the city. The tomb of the Dutch scholar Erasmus, who died in Basel in the 16th century, is also located in the cathedral. The Basel Minster is one of the main attractions and a landmark of the city of Basel in Switzerland. The cathedral shapes the cityscape with the red sandstone design and the colorful roof tiles, its two slender church towers and the cross-penetrating main roofs.

St. Jakob-Park (known locally as “Joggeli”) is the largest football stadium in Switzerland and home to FC Basel. Six games of the 2008 European Football Championship took place here. The stadium has a capacity of 38,512 spectators. It is a UEFA category 4 stadium, the highest classification of the European Football Association.
The St. Jakob-Park is also part of the St. Jakob Sports Center, which includes numerous sports fields and on whose territory the St. Jakobshalle and the St. Jakob Arena are also located.
