Amidst the success of the multibillion-dollar South Korean industry that is K-Pop, and the critically acclaimed 2019 Oscar winner film Parasite, the country has catapulted itself to fame once again with its recent cultural phenomenon Squid Game. We can all agree that Squid Game is a masterpiece, and despite having similar ‘games of death’ dark themes from previous blockbusters such as Hunger Games, Alice and Borderland, or Battle Royale, the Netflix series injected issues of social allegories, man’s true nature, and the lives of the country’s most marginalized, stirring it all with a dystopian approach of thriller, making it all the more exciting and appealing to viewers. Squid Game is today’s most streamed series on the giant online platform Netflix, with more than a hundred million households watching in the last two months since its release. Not to mention, it also received a pretty impressive score of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the Netflix series’ success is no surprise to many, as Squid Game immediately made it to the top lists of most watched in almost a hundred countries, even without heavy promotion on its back. So it is also no question that Netflix will definitely have a part 2 of this series. The production team owes it to us fans, at least! Apart from it being such a waste of a beautifully crafted series if they don’t do a part 2 on it, the ending was also a major cliffhanger which suggests that fans still have something to wait for. And buckle up, Squid Game fans, because our wish has been granted! Despite not having any updates from Netflix itself regarding the series’ season 2, the creator himself has officially answered the question: Will there be a Squid Game Season 2? And the answer is a BIG, BIG YES. Short of an official renewal announcement from Netflix, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who wrote and directed all nine episodes of the hit Korean drama, is out there confirming the rumors and saying the show will return. “There will indeed be a second season,” Hwang told the Associated Press in a video posted on November 9. “It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently,” he continued. “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” the director even added, which is so true, we do admit. However, Hwang tempered expectations by saying it’s too early to give any concrete details about the follow-up to the smash hit, and Netflix hasn’t made any official announcement yet. Yet, despite this, the creator himself gave away some details that we shouldn’t miss! From the returning cast members to the plot where the next games will revolve in, here is everything that Squid Game season 2 may include. Again, get ready for some spoilers along the way! Where the series left off
The series left off on a major cliffhanger with Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, running out of the airport, most likely on a mission to stop next year's games. We have watched Gi-hun grow a lot since the start of the first season. He started out as a selfish gambler who stole from his mother and failed as a father. By the end of the season, he changes into a selfless hero who is now on a new quest to save others from the brutality of the games. The last season left off with Gi-Hun living up to his promises; he retrieves Sae-byeok's brother and brings him to Sang-woo's mother, giving her a substantial amount of money. In the final moments of the episode, Gi-hun is about to board a plane to see his daughter. Gi-hun demands to know who runs the game, but his request is denied. Gi-hun then leaves the boarding gate on a new quest for answers.
Season 2 Plot and what will it be about
It seems that Gi-hun will now go and find more answers about the games in season 2. There is a definitive plot for season 2.
According to director Hwang, he originally intended this moment to be one of closure—but there is potential to take it further. “Season one ends with Gi-hun turning back.
Hwang told Radio Times that the second season would clarify the story of the color of cards. He further adds that “it is an interesting theory, and I wish to discuss it in season two.” The Old Man Oh ll-nam’s story will also be explored in season two.
