Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss won the last lawmaker vote to succeed Boris Johnson as Britain's future prime minister.
Conservative MPs have consistently voted for Sunak, but the 200,000 members of the ruling party who will finally decide the winner seem to favor Truss.
Sunak, a former Goldman Sachs banker who hiked taxes to the highest level since the 1950s, faces Truss, a Brexit convert who promises to decrease taxes and regulation.
Whoever wins on Sept. 5 will inherit Britain's worst circumstances in decades. Inflation is on track to exceed 11%, GDP is stagnating, industrial action is rising, and the pound is approaching record lows versus the dollar.
Johnson and Truss adopted a strong position against Brussels in post-Brexit Northern Ireland discussions, triggering legal action and endangering future economic links.
