Hello! My name is Kate Scott and I am the new Executive Director of the Equal Rights Center. I’ve served in multiple roles at the organization since 2015. Through my time at the ERC so far, I’ve been able to see how significant the Americans with Disabilities Act — or ADA — has been in protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
The ADA was signed into law 30 years ago on July 26, 1990, and was intended as a “national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities”. This month at the ERC, we’re going to take some time to commemorate such a momentous anniversary. Of course, we didn’t anticipate that we’d have to do this in the midst of a pandemic. To keep everyone safe, we’ve moved our commemoration completely online.
Throughout the month, we’ll be marking the anniversary in two ways: First, we’ll be amplifying the voices and perspectives of disabled people of color by sharing content, opportunities to engage, and information about how to support the people behind those voices. This Spring, we’ve all witnessed an overdue reckoning over racial injustice across the country that has moved #BlackLivesMatter from the fringe to the forefront. So we’ll especially be looking to share content aligned with the belief that #BlackDisabledLivesMatter. Second, we’ll be publishing a video series from ERC stakeholders reflecting on the impact of the ADA but also its unfulfilled mandate.
Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates. We’ll also be sharing information through our email list. Thank you!
