Lauterbrunnen is situated in one of the most impressive trough valleys in the Swiss Alps region, between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks, together with its 72 waterfalls. It is one of the biggest nature conservation areas in Switzerland.
Although Lauterbrunnen is home to 72 waterfalls most of them are fairly thinner water streams flowing over the rock faces. The most famous and iconic waterfall is the Staubbach Falls, which is almost 300 metres high and is considered one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe.
Lauterbrunnen can easily be reached by train and it's a short walk from the railway station to the waterfall area. Due to its central location in the Jungfrayu region, most people base their stay in Lauterbrunnen and do day trips to the nearby destinations like Grindelwald, Wengen, Murren, Jungfraujoch.
Some people feel somewhat "locked-in" in Lauterbrunnen because of the narrow valley and the rock walls on both sides of the village. Unlike the villages in the mountains, Lauterbrunnen can be shady for quite some time each day, because the sun is hidden behind the mountains.
When you are visiting the waterfalls, don't forget to visit the water stream flowing by the side. It is fed directly by the glaciers and hence it has an amazing blue colour. 💙💙💙
