Russia lowered its threshold for nuclear use. They’re framing it as a response to Western missiles striking inside Russia—but here’s the thing: they’ve been planning this change since September. When asked if they would use nuclear weapons now, Russia said they “reserve the right” if such an attack creates a “critical threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity”. So what does that even mean? The vagueness is the point. They say that it’s no different from US nuclear policy and they’re right. The US’s nuclear policy is also deliberately vague on when it might use nuclear weapons. This move though is mostly about trying to induce hysteria among westerners. Russia wants you to believe that now they could use nuclear weapons because the West has somehow provoked them. But nearly every expert is saying the same thing. North Korea entering the war in Europe is a massive provocation & the idea that western missiles striking inside of Russia as a response is now suddenly the tipping point is.. Absurd. Especially since Ukraine already has their own missiles and drones that strike deep inside Russia on a regular basis. With many arguing: This move by the US was very telegraphed. Russia was told that if North Korea entered the war that this would happen. Russia did the calculation and moved forward anyways.
