Former foreign minister Alexander Downer doesn't believe China is on the "threshold" of invading Taiwan.

China is holding fresh military exercises around Taiwan in what it is calling a "stern warning" against the island democracy seeking independence.

"I don't think they would dare do that and run the risk of a huge major war – in particular with the United States," Mr Downer told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
