The recent dominance of supermarket bought milk has meant that prices have declined and many dairy farmers have gone out of business. At the turn of the century milk prices were sometimes lower than the cost of production. The Gosling family turned to organic farming methods in order to survive.
Organic means working with nature, avoiding the use of antibiotics and chemicals and a focus on animal welfare. It is a risk to completely change the method of production but if they can sell enough then they'll be able to turn a profit. It took three years to get certification and they had to use a grant. But they have discovered that organic methods can have great wider benefits to the land and their cows.
This clip is from the BBC series Mud, Sweat and Tractors; five short films looking at the history of farming in Britain over the last 80 years.
