Here's a short video tracking our mission to recreate the iconic vocal sound from 10cc's I'm Not in Love' from scratch, between February and June 2022.
Friends, family, fellow musicians and complete strangers from Twitter and Facebook sent in up to 13 vocal parts for each note of an octave between G# and G#. Some were multi-tracked already in home studios, others simply recorded on people's phones. Forty people contributed in the end, including 10cc's Graham Gouldman and Iain Hornal, The Christians' Henry Priestman and Carol Jason from BBC2's Rock Til You Drop.
Each note of the scale was mixed separately, with everyone's notes looped for 9 minutes. These were mixed onto individual tracks of a multi-track digital recorder: the late Chris White's 'Mistress', which has proved a worthy facsimile of Strawberry Studios' famous Helios 16-channel mixing desk!
For the two low notes heard at the end of the song in the 'call and response' coda, I first dubbed the recordings onto tape running at 15 inches per second, then created a physical 12-foot tape loop for the F# and G# notes. These were played back at 7.5ips (half speed), with the tape running around a mic stand six feet away, exactly as was used by 10cc in the studio!
We now have fifteen tracks of individual notes, which we'll play back live during our performance at 50cc on June 24th and 25th. All told, we have nearly 800 vocals on this new recording! I think you'll agree it sounds amazing.
