The post of Lokayukta in Gujarat is lying vacant for last ten years and it isn't still not clear if a Lokayukta is going to be appointed any soon. The Gujarat government has persistently opposed appointment of retired justice R A Mehta, appointed by the Governor, as Lokayukta. The state government has now brought an amendment bill diluting the role of Governor and set aside Chief Justice of High Court in appointing the Lokayukta.
