In this video, we will show you a top 10 list of the best 21st century westerns ever made. Cowboys are far from gone, on the contrary! In the last few decades, many modern westerns have been made with some receiving positive critical acclaim.

The western has long been a staple of not just American cinema, but also cinema from all around the world. In fact there was a period during the fifties and sixties where it was probably the number one movie genre out there in terms of what audiences were willing to pay and go see. Basically it was the superhero genre of its time. But while that period might have been the heyday of the western, this shouldn’t suggest it isn’t still alive and well today.

No, even now in the 21st century, great westerns continue to be made all the time, with this proving just how much life there is left in the genre. And if you need any evidence of that, you need only look to the likes of 2007’s 3:10 to Yuma, 2010’s True Grit, 2015’s The Hateful Eight, or 2007’s masterpiece The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

And then of course there are all the neo westerns that are out there, stories which may not revolve around cowboys exactly but still keep the spirit of the western alive with the desert setting and the themes of those older movies. This can be found in huge hits like The Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. Basically, all of this is to say that the western isn’t going anywhere for a long time yet as there are still plenty more stories left to tell in the genre.
