Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) was the 2nd novel published by French author Jules Verne. A young German man named Axel, tells of his travels with his Uncle Otto. Otto is a geologist who found a secret manuscript by the missing Icelandic explorer Arne Saknussemm, who describes his journey to the center of the earth. And so, the enthusiastic Otto and the dubious Axel set out to retrace Saknussemm’s trail. Many adventures and wonders are encountered. Will they make it? Only one way to find out. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was born in Nantes, France. Early impressions of adventure were imprinted on Jules by an uncle who had voyaged around the world. At the end of secondary school, Jules received his Baccalaureate after earning the grade “Good Enough.”
Mr. Verne refused his father’s demand to pursue law and instead chose a writing career. He also studied science articles and books with which he enhanced his writings. His first commissions were for magazine stories. He also became a successful broker in a family business whose daughter he wanted to marry (and did). In the decade after his famous novels were published, From Earth to the Moon, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, etc., Mr. Verne was finally able live off his writings. To this day, Jules Verne’s novels are read throughout the world and he is considered a founding father of science fiction.

Daniel Philpott is British actor who has performed in many theater plays; The Cherry Orchard, The Strike of 1889, The Yeats Season, Hamlet… He appears in the 2023 film The Boys in the Boat, as Hitler. He also appeared in The Crown tv series, as Hitler. Most notably, Mr. Philpott has voiced over 150 audiobooks and gives a fine performance on this one. His robust vocal depiction of Uncle Otto makes me think he went home afterwards with a sore throat and hoarse voice. 😊
