An Uncommon King tells the life story of a Tibetan spiritual king (Mipham Rinpoche) as he takes over from his unconventional, charismatic father (Trungpa Rinpoche) to bring ancient wisdom to a modern world.
His unique title, Sakyong, literally means "Earth Protector". He is part of a lineage of spiritual kings. When greed and aggression tip the balance of nature and society, he is responsible for transmitting the antidote -- teachings on how to bring about a good human society. Shot over seventeen years in twelve countries including Europe, North America, Tibet, India and China.
"We're living in a culture where there is a deep feeling of humanity being bad. That there's something wrong with us. We're being brought up in a culture that is saying you're selfish and that's human nature.
My father used to say in the Shambhala Tradition we believe that everybody is gifted. We are complete. We're trying to shift a culture to feel their humanity and to validate those feelings of compassion, of kindness, of goodness."
"What my father was trying to express was that it does matter what a society thinks about itself. A society can be based on the notion of human worthiness. This point gets lost so often. He felt that out of all the spiritual knowledge he had, that if he could transmit the notion of human dignity, human worthiness, that could be a foundational principle for society."
