Here in Toronto (USDA zone 5), most fig trees have to be grown in pots for overwintering indoors. I tested 3 different cultivars and only 1 grew so well that we got a harvest in its second season. Digging up the tree and trench it for the winter is too much work. Hereby I share my tricks for successfully growing a fig tree outdoors in your Toronto urban garden.
Fig trees are the easiest fruit trees to grow and they start fruiting very young. You will be surprised that it is quite easy to get hold of this inexpensive cold hardy variety. They propagate super easily (I liked it some much that I am going to add 2 more trees). There are no pest that bothers it aside from the critters that attack the ripe fruit, therefore it is super easy to grow this fruit completely pesticide free! The taste is wonderful (my little one loves it).
Compared to my potted fig trees, growing it in ground is much easier to take care of. 99% harvest every year once you have the routine right. Unlike the potted plants, if you take them outside too early your fig tree can go into shock and there will be no harvest that season. The tree in the ground is much healthier and vigourous. Maybe I will make a video to provide more information on this topic next year :).
All in all, give fig trees a try. If you have access to a sunny window, grow a fig =). I promise you, you will love it =).
