BLACK SWANS MATING DANCE ~ With it's long slender neck stretched out low over the water, it's a cue for it's partner to respond with identical behaviour. As the two birds come together, the aquatic ballet begins. The swans cross their necks and commence neck-dipping in a synchrony for up to 10-20 minutes, each with it's gracefully curved neck arched over the body of it's partner. The male grasps a tuft of feathers on the female's neck , positioning himself on her back... his weight causes her to sink beneath the surface (during which insemination presumably takes place under water)... After a few seconds, they both extend their necks and call loudly, after which they splash, roll and preen themselves before resting.
