Apple Pro Res is one of the most popular video Codecs used in the film and television industry. Apple has recently expanded Pro Res compatibility for Windows users. There are two fantastic free solutions for those that need to playback Pro Res files. The first is VLC player. VLC is like a Swiss army knife for playing back video and audio files. The second option is DaVinci Resolve, which is a full-blown suite of video editing tools and color correction software.
There are a lot of suspicious software packages out there that also promise Pro Res Codecs on Windows. The issue with writing in this manner, however, is how the metadata gets written to video. One of the first lines of metadata in an Apple-approved progress file will state that it's Apple-approved, while the FFmpeg version will not. The worst-case scenario, when you’re operating with the FFmpeg version, is that a client rejects your video for not meeting criteria during a technical inspection.
This video short from OWC will show you how to use the proper software to easily write with Apple Pro Res on your PC computer. Let’s delve in!
