Have you ever heard about the Cities Mission? In 2021, the European Commission launched five new EU missions, a collaborative approach aiming to stimulating innovation across diverse sectors, through missions targeting important societal challenges such as health and well-being, climate and demographic changes or mobility issues. The fourth of these missions is called "100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030", or the Cities Mission. Cities were invited to express their interest to become part of the Mission in November 2021. Overall, 377 cities applied and only 100 of them were selected to participate in this programme. La Louvière, a 64 km2 city located in Wallonia, Belgium, is one of them. Therefore, at UMX, we had to see it for ourselves. We travelled to La Louvière to understand what this Cities Mission is and how it can encourage La Louvière to become climate neutral by 2030.
