Upma is a very healthy and delicious dish. Upma is made with roasted semolina or rava. Upma is not only quick and easy but also quite nutritious. Upma makes for a great breakfast. I have shared with you 3 delicious upma recipes- Classic Upma, Vegetable Upma and Tomato Upma.

Recipe:
Classic Upma
Preparation time:5 mins
Cooking time:15 mins
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients:
1 cup semolina
1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
1 green chilly, chopped
1 tbsp chana dal
½ tbsp urad dal
½ inch ginger, finely chopped
2 ½ cups water
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 sprig of curry leaves
2 tbsp roasted peanuts
7-8 cashew nuts
2 tbsp oil
salt as required
Method:
In a pan, heat the oil. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds crackle, add peanuts, cashew nuts, chana dal and urad dal and sauté till golden in color.
Add cashews and sauté for 30 seconds. Add onions and sauté till they become transparent.
Add the green chilly, ginger and the curry leaves.
Fry for a minute. Now add water to this mixture and let it come to a boil. When the water comes to a rolling boiling, lower the flame and add the roasted semolina and salt to it.
Keep on stirring while you add the semolina in a flow. Keep on stirring.
Reduce the flame and simmer the upma for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and cover for 4-5 minutes.
Garnish upma with coriander leaves. Serve hot.
Vegetable Upma
Preparation time:5 mins
Cooking time:15 mins
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients:
1 cup semolina
1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
1 tsp chopped green chili
1 tbsp chana dal
1 tbsp urad dal
1 tsp ginger, finely chopped
2 ½ cups water
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 sprig of curry leaves
¼ cup chopped carrots
¼ cup chopped beans
¼ cup chopped peas
¼ cup capsicum
2 tbsp oil
½ tsp turmeric powder
salt as required
Method:
In a pan, heat the oil. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds crackle, chana dal and urad dal and sauté till golden in color.
Add the green chilly, ginger and the curry leaves.
Fry for a minute. Add the chopped vegetables and saute for 2 minutes. Now add water to this mixture and let it come to a boil. When the water comes to a rolling boiling, lower the flame and add the roasted semolina and salt to it.
Keep on stirring while you add the semolina in a flow. Keep on stirring. Reduce the flame and simmer the upma for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and cover for 4-5 minutes.
Garnish upma with coriander leaves. Serve hot.
Tomato Upma
Preparation time:5 mins
Cooking time:15 mins
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients:
1 cup semolina
1 medium sized onion, finely chopped
1 tsp chopped green chili
1 tbsp chana dal
1 tbsp urad dal
1 tsp ginger, finely chopped
2 ½ cups water
1 tsp mustard seeds
½ cup chopped tomatoes
¼ cup tomato puree
¼ cup peas
2 tbsp oil
½ tsp turmeric powder
salt as required
Method:
In a pan, heat the oil. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds crackle, chana dal and urad dal and sauté till golden in color.
Add the green chili, ginger and the curry leaves.
Fry for a minute.
Add the red chili powder, chopped tomatoes and sauté till tomatoes are tender. Add the tomato puree, green peas and the water. Now add water to this mixture and let it come to a boil. When the water comes to a rolling boiling, lower the flame and add the roasted semolina and salt to it.
Keep on stirring while you add the semolina in a flow. Keep on stirring. Reduce the flame and simmer the upma for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and cover for 4-5 minutes.
Garnish upma with coriander leaves. Serve hot.
