Unsurprisingly to those that know me, this record did not fall into my hands out of nowhere...
As a supporter of the multi-media band Psychic T.V in the 1980's, I was aware of some of the instruments that made up some of the early recordings, namely Tibetan thigh bone horns, amply heard on 'Themes' the free album that accompanied the 'Force The Hand Of Chance' album, Psychic T.V's debut album.
The sound had also been heard on recordings from 23 Skidoo, namely the 'Culling Is Coming' album recorded live at the W.O.M.A.D music festival in 1982.One of the most intense live albums I own.
The man responsible for the Tibetan horns, for both 23 Skidoo and Psychic T.V was David Tibet, there is probably a clue in the name if one investigates further.
David Tibet broke away from Psychic T.V by 1984 to concentrate on his own project, the now long running Current 93. Another band that I hold in high regard throughout their career.
In 1985 Psychic T.V released 'Themes 2' was ambient in it's own way (read 'Another Green World - Eno ambient) alongside nine minutes of river flowing and bird chirping, ending with several more minutes of a kind of screaming Throbbing Gristle drone.
This later album, tellingly had no Tibetan thigh bone honking.
Around the mid to late 1980's, myself and some others would converge at Soho in the west end of London for a semi regular meal, which was always free of charge, and also would always be vegetarian.
The place we were going to was the Hare Krishna Temple in W1 where there was a day (I think these weekly meets were on a Thursday but could be wrong) that visitors could come and 'learn' about the teachings and dogma of the Krishna religion, while eating many delicious foods, while listening to a musical ambience of bells, weird sounds, horns and so forth performed live as we sat.
Everyone was given a small book to take away after each visit. I still have several at home.
Both Psychic T.V and 23 Skidoo (and by default David Tibet) and these semi regular meetings at the Temple pushed me to appreciate Tibetan, Chinese and Indian music further, and this album uploaded this evening was the very first album that I bought of this Asian world music genre, to listen to at home...
I was glad I bought it...
