In November 2018 a H.E.R.P. Expedition set out to the last remaining wilds in Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, to find some of the most beautiful vipers in the world. One of them, the Rhinoceros Viper (Bitis nasicornis), has been crowned the most beautiful snake of the planet... In our eyes; the True Pearl fo Africa!

After many long days and nights, we were finally able to track down an incredible looking, young individual. His colors, horns and attitude made it the most incredible find of the trip.

Finding these vipers is not easy... getting to the isolated forest patches can be tricky and sometimes even dangerous. Nonetheless, these small forest patches are the last remaining strongholds for this species in Eastern Africa. Many of them will be cut down in the upcoming year... Next to the evergrowing deforestation, the patches are also well known among wildlife traffickers and smugglers, causing a quick demise for local, tiny populations already marked for extinction.
