James Kalm, despite his best laid plans, and intentions, still has to compete with “real life”. Setting off with the notion of taking a leisurely Saturday afternoon tour through the latest Charline von Heyl exhibition, Kalm heads out from his Red Hook studio. But before your correspondent can even get across the East River, he’s informed by a platoon of New York City Police Department officers that the Brooklyn Bridge is the scene of rowdy protests. Your reporter turns back, and makes a time-consuming detour across the Manhattan Bridge. Thus, by the time he gets to Chelsea, he’s left with a mere twenty minutes to explore the von Heyl show. Von Heyl has been receiving substantial critical attention recently for her spontaneous brushwork, eclectic techniques, and whimsical approach to abstraction. Hidden within what might appear as the facile, are historic and contemporary references to influential works, and trends, that bind the artist to the rich legacy of New York painting, and the German Trans-Avantgarde. This program was recorded October 28, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
