Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is to have surgery for bleeding on the brain, possibly caused by hitting her head in a fall in August.
On Saturday she was told to rest for a month due to her condition but the 60-year-old was readmitted to hospital on Monday after reporting tingling in her left arm.
The surgery means she won't be able to campaign for this month's congressional elections.
In a speech, Vice-President Amado Boudou indicated that the president's team would manage Argentina's affairs in her absence.
"These 30 days will be exactly the same," he said. "There is not any doubt, nothing strange about it. She is taking some rest. Rest she needs. On top of that, guys, she deserves it!"
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner had surgery for suspected thyroid cancer last year. It turned out to be a false alarm. Her husband, former President Nestor Kirchner, died from a heart attack in 2010.
