Part 9 of my Singapore to London Overland journey
In 2016/17, I embarked on an overland journey, from Singapore to London, by train, bus and cruise ship. Some of the major routes include the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Siberian railway.
An overland journey that crossed 2 continents / 14 countries / 19 cities, in 75 days.
Singapore - Malaysia - Thailand - Cambodia - Vietnam - China - Mongolia - Russia - Finland - Sweden - Denmark - Germany - France - UK
(Part 9)
In early-Dec 2017, I took the Trans-Mongolian train route, from Beijing, China to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. This was an overnight train. K23 (northbound)
The ticket situation is a bit tricky because this is considered an international train, so one cannot buy the ticket at Beijing Railway station.
Seat61.com will tell you that you have to buy from a 3rd party international office in Beijing.
The office was not opened (on weekend) while I was there. So I bought a ticket for the same train (K23) to the border town of Erlian (this is considered domestic, so I could buy from the Beijing Railway station).
Then at Erlian station, I "top-up" my ticket (locals call it "补票“ / “bu piao” ) to Ulaanbaatar for the same train. I'm not sure if you can do this during the peak season, because tickets may get sold out. I could take this risk to "top-up", because it was winter/off-season.
Much of Ulaanbaatar is going through rapid urbanisation and is becoming more modern by the day.
Do ask your hostel/hotel for day tour recommendations if you want to see the grasslands/parks.
The amazing chicken outlet is Оргио Китчен Factory Store.
IMAX cinema is at Urgoo 3 Cinema, Shangri-La Centre.
And do read up on basic Mongolian Cyrillic letters and phrases before visiting, it will help alot!
My departure from Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk, Russia was the best ever (for me), because there was a christening ceremony and a brass band send-off! You can buy your train tickets from the ticket office at the Ulaanbaatar Railway station.
