The COVID-19 pandemic, the escalating climate and biodiversity crisis, and rising food insecurity have demonstrated the critical role the World Bank plays in protecting global public goods and responding to global challenges. In October 2021, CGD co-hosted an official side event on the role of the World Bank in this space, evidencing substantial consensus for an update and revisit of the Bank’s efforts.
This year, we reflect on what has changed, and what several of the World Bank’s largest shareholders still want to see from Bank leadership, focusing on the institutional, operational, and financial reforms needed to deliver on the agenda. What global public goods should the Bank focus on? How should the global agenda fit inside and outside the country engagement model? How to assign subsidies for global challenges while avoiding a crowd out of funding for the poorest countries and IDA? How to systematize the use of concessionality across different uses and countries? Join CGD for a timely discussion with shareholders on how the World Bank can better respond to global challenges.
