In EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area) areas, materials to protect against static electricity (ESD) are used. They are classified according to their resistance and resistivity characteristics.
*ESD shielding materials* - full protection of this type is provided by a Faraday cage. An important shielding material against static discharges is conductive metal or carbon, which dampens and weakens the energy of the electric field.
*Conductive materials* - they are characterized by low resistance and they allow for fast charge movement. If a conductive material is grounded, charges flow away from it quickly. Examples of conductive materials: carbon, metals-conductors.
*Charge dissipative materials* - in these materials charges flow to the ground slower than in the case of conductive materials, their destructive potential is reduced.
*Insulation materials* - difficult to ground. Static charges remain in this type of material for a long time. Examples of insulation materials: glass, air, commonly used plastic packaging.
*Material and Criteria:*
► ESD shielding materials: Rv from 100 Ω.
► Conductive materials: Rs from 100 Ω to 100 kΩ.
► Dissipative materials: Rv from 100 kΩ to 100 GΩ.
► Insulation materials: Rs from 100 GΩ.
*To take a measurement you need to set:*
► measuring voltage Un - according to the EN 61340-4-1 standard: 10 V / 100 V / 500 V.
► measurement duration time t - according to EN 61340-4-1: 15 s ± 2 s.
► measurement method:
- point-to-point resistance - Rp-p,
- point-ground resistance - Rp-g,
- surface resistance - Rs,
- volume resistance - Rv.
► limits - see evaluation criteria according to EN 61340-5-1 standard.
*Tested object and criteria:*
► Surfaces: Rp-g up to 1 GΩ; Rp-p up to 1 GΩ.
► Floors: Rp-g up to 1 GΩ.
► Conductive packages: Rs from 100 Ω to 100 kΩ.
► Dissipative packaging: Rs from 100 kΩ to 100 GΩ.
► Insulating packaging: Rs from 100 GΩ.
