Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) is a military medical facility located in Washington D.C., named after Major Walter Reed, a U.S. Army physician who led the team that confirmed that yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes rather than direct contact.
The hospital was established in 1909, when the U.S. Army purchased a Civil War-era hospital in Washington D.C. to serve as a new military medical center. Over the years, WRAMC expanded and modernized its facilities, becoming one of the premier military medical facilities in the world. During World War II, the hospital treated thousands of wounded soldiers and also served as a research center for tropical diseases.
In the decades that followed, WRAMC treated veterans of conflicts such as the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also provided medical care to high-ranking military officials and dignitaries, as well as President Woodrow Wilson after his stroke.
In 2011, Walter Reed Army Medical Center was closed, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) was opened in Bethesda, Maryland, in its place. The new facility combined Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center, creating a joint medical facility for the U.S. Armed Forces.
