TS11 RAAF Fire fighters
A team of Royal Australian Air Force firefighters is currently providing Exercise Talisman Sabre 2011 with vital fire rescue services in support of air operations at Williamson Airfield in the Shoalwater Bay training area. The 32 firefighters from RAAF Williamtown, near Newcastle, NSW, are using three dedicated fire rescue vehicles, including one of 16 new Rosenbauer Panther vehicles purchased by the RAAF in 2008. The six-wheel drive Panther is able to rapidly traverse airfield obstacles such as drains, fences and other obstacles. It is fitted with a large capacity tank, high-volume pumps and two water cannon to deliver fire retardant with pin-point accuracy to rescue passengers and aircrew and prevent the spread of fire. In addition to supporting air operations, the firefighters spend time each day maintaining the vehicles, practising firefighting and rescue drills and patrolling the airfield to ensure wildlife in the Shoalwater Bay training area do not wander on the runway. Exercise Talisman Sabre (11--29 July 2011) is a major bilateral exercise designed to train Australian and United States forces in planning and conducting combined operations across the full spectrum of military full spectrum of military operations from conventional conflict to peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance in order to improve Australian--US combat readiness and interoperability.
