Russian Scientists Grow Watermelons in the Coldest Place on Earth
Russian Scientists have managed to grow watermelons at one of the coldest and most extreme places on Earth - the Vostok research facility in Antarctica.
A designated small greenhouse was installed in one of the research facility buildings, and a suitable species of watermelon was picked, based on its ability to grow despite low atmosphere pressure and low levels of oxygen.
The station, which lies at the southern Pole of Cold, holds the record for the world's coldest temperature to be directly recorded at ground level to be -89C. Researchers from Russia's Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute said that growing vegetables, berries and herbs raised the spirits of scientists staying at the station, often for long periods of time in cramped living stations and sometimes with little access to natural light.
