Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson defended her choice on Thursday not to search the Prairie Green Landfill, where the bodies of two women are believed to be buried.
Stefanson said that it was a "difficult discussion to have with the family members" when she presented the decision. She defended her choice by pointing to significant safety concerns for the workers who would perform the search, adding a memorial would be an option depending on how the family felt.
Later on Thursday, Cambria Harris, the daughter of one of the victims, joined protesters at a blockade near Brady Road Landfill.
In her rebuttal to the Premier's words, Harris said, "The Premier says she's worried about the safety of the workers as though the workers would be city employees, when, in fact, the report specifies the workers would be forensic professionals who have performed searches like this before.
Regarding the Premier's proposed memorialization, Harris said that such an idea suggests that Stefanson "is comfortable with the landfill remaining a gravesite."
